The Delaire Graff Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2015 has been placed among the top performers in the seventh annual Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report 2018, where it received a remarkable 93 points out of a possible 100. One of only five wines to have achieved this honour.
The awards celebrate South African Cabernet Sauvignon and aim to identify wines which stand uncontested as exceptional within international standards. According to Christian Eedes who chaired the expert judging panel, this year’s findings proved “a timely reminder why so many consider Cab to be king”.
Wines were tasted blind and ratings scored on the 100-point system. Of the 89 entries received from 74 producers, 40 wines rated 90 points or higher (45% versus 23% in the 2017 report) with 25 of these 40 from the 2015 vintage. The panel was suitably impressed with the quality of this vintage – “2015 has been billed as one of the great vintages of the modern era and based on this tasting, the hype is completely justified”, said Christian Eedes.
The dry 2015 weather led to one of the healthiest seasons in years with very little loss. Warm weather resulted in earlier bud break and a dry and windy summer regulated growth accelerating ripening. Wines were above average in quality with exceptional analysis and flavour. Winemaker, Morné Vrey, had the following to say regarding his award-winning vintage “This is a great accomplishment achieved by a particularly good vintage”.
The Delaire Graff Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2015 was produced with meticulous care, resulting in a complex and powerful wine, boasting layers of flavour and a lingering finish. Tasting notes feature classic hints of red and black fruit, violets, pencil shavings and oak spice on the nose, while the palate is rich and full but perfectly balanced. The grapes were hand-picked in the early hours of the morning from the Estate’s exquisite vineyards and extensively hand-sorted to ensure the best quality is used for winemaking. Whole berry fermentation and tender basket pressing ensured gentle extraction of fruit. Matured for 18 months in 100% new French oak, paired with a rigorous selection process to decide on only the finest barrels. The wine is suited for ageing of 6-10 years.
Delaire Graff Estate congratulates the cellar team led by winemaker Morné Vrey on this prestigious honour.
