Notes from the Gardens

Nurturing our heritage

Nestled within a dramatic mountain setting and wonderfully in bloom every day of the year, the gardens at Delaire Graff Estate emulate the beauty and diversity of our nation, with over 350 species of indigenous plants intertwined with locally crafted art and sculpture.

Protea

Flourishing in abundance within our gardens, proteas, also known as sugarbushes, symbolise transformation and renewal, with the king protea (Protea cynaroides) recognised as South Africa’s national flower. Deeply connected to the land, these plants are celebrated as part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.

Bird of Paradise
The Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) displays vivid orange and blue inflorescences that resemble a colourful bird. Native to South Africa, it has become a symbol of freedom and joy – and thriving in our gardens, it is a living celebration of resilience and elegance.

Mandela’s Gold
Mandela’s Gold (Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold’) is a rare golden cultivar of the Bird of Paradise, admired for its striking yellow and blue flowers. This unusual variety of Strelitzia reginae was cultivated by horticulturists at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town and subsequently named in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Hibiscus
An exquisite flowering plant, Hibiscus is known for its bold, trumpet-shaped flowers in vibrant red, pink, yellow and orange hues. Thriving in full sun and warm climates, it attracts pollinators such as butterflies and bees. Over 50 species of Hibiscus are found in South Africa across a diverse variety of habitats.

With 12 hectares of gardens to tend, our 13 gardeners at Delaire Graff Estate are each responsible for around one hectare of land. Each morning, the pathways between the lodges are meticulously swept and cleared, ensuring that by the time our first guests stroll to breakfast, every step is welcoming and beautifully pristine.

Should a guest stop to ask about a flowering plant or a mature tree, our gardeners can speak with complete authority about their section.

Inspired by the landscape, culture and natural radiance of its Cape Winelands setting, Delaire Graff Estate is a destination devoted to beauty in its many forms. Created by renowned diamantaire Laurence Graff OBE, experience flawless hospitality, cuisine, wine, art and spa – and embrace the peace and serenity of your surroundings.
