DELAIRE GRAFF estate nominated for ‘Winery experience of the year’
2019 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards
Stellenbosch, South Africa; September 5, 2019: It is with great pride that Delaire Graff Estate announces its nomination for a 2019 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award in the new ‘Winery Experience of the Year’ category, one of only five wineries in the world to receive this honour. The wine experience at Delaire Graff offers its discerning guests a multifaceted experience marrying food, wine and art in an unparalleled setting. It encompasses the Estate’s two award-winning restaurants, state-of-the-art winery and bespoke Wine Lounge. This elegant and welcoming art-filled space, designed by David Collins Studio, has deep lavender leather sofas to sink into and tables on the terrace under the trees with unsurpassed vineyard, valley and mountain views. Throughout the year, guests are invited to enjoy leisurely guided tastings of the subtly nuanced, terroir-specific wines produced on the estate below the Botmaskop Peak.
Each year, the editors of Wine Enthusiast magazine, nominate and honour the most influential individuals and companies across the globe that have made outstanding achievements in the alcohol beverage industry. The debut of the ‘Winery Experience of the Year’ category coincides with the Wine Star Awards’ 20th-anniversary celebrations. Delaire Graff Estate has been nominated as one of only five wineries, all of them prestigious and innovative wine brands in iconic wine regions around the world. The other nominees are d’Arenberg (a fourth-generation family-owned winery in McClaren Vale, South Australia); the avant-garde Prisoner Wine Company (Napa Valley, California); style icon Viña Vik (Millahue, Chile); and the well-established Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture (La Rioja, Spain).
To be recognised by one of the US’s most prestigious wine magazines and to be in such illustrious company is a great honour. The winner will be announced on winemag.com on 31 October 2019, and appear in the special ‘Best of Year’ print issue of the magazine to be released on the same day. Furthermore, the winner will be honoured at Wine Enthusiast’s annual black-tie gala event with all the other Wine Star Award category winners which will be held for the first time in San Francisco in early 2020.
Delaire Graff’s nomination follows hot on the heels of its recent success at the World’s Best Vineyards Awards in which the estate was placed 39th overall out of 50 vineyards – one of only three South African vineyards featured on the list. Most recently, the Estate’s top claret, the Laurence Graff Reserve 2015, has received 97 points in the 2019 Tim Atkin South Africa Report, ranking it as the top Cabernet Sauvignon in the country. Of the twelve Delaire Graff wines tasted for the 2019 Report, all received 91 points and above. Cellarmaster Morné Vrey, viticulturist Kallie Fernhout, and the entire Delaire Graff wine team are behind this phenomenal success. Furthermore, Delaire Graff is one of only nine vineyards in South Africa to receive First Growth status six or more times, an achievement it has retained in the latest Tim Atkin report.
Global recognition is indeed serendipitous in the year that Delaire Graff Estate celebrates and reflects back on its first decade, a time during which it has established itself as the Jewel of the Cape Winelands and a benchmark of excellence in South Africa, rated in equal measure for its wine, food, service, gardens, views, and magnificent contemporary art collection.
